Eight young women participated in a study to investigate the relationship between the menstrual cycle and food intake. Dietary information was obtained every day by interview; the study was double-blind in the sense that the participants did not know its purpose and the interviewer did not know the timing of their menstrual cycles. The table shows, for each participant, the average caloric intake for the 10 days preceding and the 10 days following the onset of the menstrual period (these data are for one cycle only).
