In the diagram, A, B and C are points on the circumference of the circle with centre O and radius r. The shaded region, ABC, is a sector of the circle with centre C. Angle OCA is equal to θ radians.

The area of the shaded region is equal to 3/8 of the area of the circle.

a. Show that

b. Verify by calculation that θ lies between 0.8 and 1.2 radians.

c. Use the iterative formula

find the value of θ correct to 3 decimal places. Give the result of each iteration to 5 decimal places.

He asked the waiter for a pen and paper and proceeded to calculate the area of the two small pizzas and compared it to the area of one large pizza. The friends were amazed at how the circle measurements worked and decided to change their order from two small pizzas to one large pizza.
