In our derivation of Kepler???s laws, we assumed the only force on a planet is due to the Sun. In a real solar system, however, the gravitational forces from the other planets can sometimes be important. Calculate the gravitational force of Jupiter on the Earth and compare it to the magnitude of the force from the Sun. Do the calculations for the cases when Jupiter is both closest to and farthest from the Earth (Fig. P5.54).
