What is the principal benefit(s) of assigning patients randomly to the treatment regimens?

Antithrombotic drugs are used after coronary stenting to prevent stent thrombosis. A study was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of three antithrombotic drug regimens after coronary stenting: aspirin alone, aspirin + warfarin, and aspirin + ticlopidine [30]. Patients were randomly assigned to one of the three regimens. The primary endpoint was any of the following outcomes: (a) death, (b) revascularization of the target lesion, or (c) angiographic evidence of thrombosis or MI within 30 days.
