Chinese trust in domestic condom brands is low. Foreign brands are faked on a huge scale in China. A very popular target for counterfeiters is Okamoto, Japan’s leading brand of condoms. Okamoto condoms have become objects of desire for Chinese tourists visiting Japan. According to Okamoto, many Chinese visitors base their shopping choices on widely circulated online lists of “must” items to buy in Japan, of which its condom brand is near the top of the lists. In 2015, the company completed a plant in China’s Guangdong province that would start producing Okamoto branded condoms in 2016. One big problem the company is facing is whether the “Made in China” stamp on condoms will hurt the appeal. In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr. Okamoto, the president of the company, said: “I am quite worried about that.
