Exercise 6: Accessing Application Software Objectives 1. Start application programs using a variety of techniques. 2. Identify the software programs or apps on your computer or mobile device. 3. Shut down the computer or mobile device. Activity (for laptops or desktops running Windows operating system) 1. Start an application using the double-click method.

a. Turn on the computer system, if necessary. (Some computer labs leave the systems on all the time and you need to log in with your credentials.) Text appears on the screen as the computer goes through start-up routines. If necessary, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to obtain the login screen. (In other words, hold down the Ctrl key, hold down the Alt key, and then press Del.) Release all three keys. If necessary, type your login name (user ID) and password and press Enter. Use the Tab key to move between the user ID text field and the password text field.

b. Double-click a Browser icon on the desktop. The browser program opens. Alternatively, you can also click the Start menu and select a browser from the menu where it might be pinned or under all programs. You may also have the icon on the quick launch area of the Taskbar.

c. Click the Close button on the browser window to close the application. 2. Start an application using the Start menu on the taskbar.

a. Click the Start menu on the taskbar. A menu appears.

b. Select scroll down until you see Windows Accessories. Click Windows Accessories and select WordPad , a word processing program that comes with Windows, which now starts.

c. Click the Close button on the WordPad window to close the application. 3. Start an application using ThisPC.

a. Double-click the ThisPC icon. Alternatively, you can click the Start menu and then the ThisPC tile option.

b. Double-click the local (OS) drive icon (usually C:), the Windows folder, and then the System32 folder. Scroll through the window to find the calculator icon .

c. Double-click the Calc icon . The calculator program opens.

d. Click the Close button on the calculator window to close the application. 4. Identify application programs on the system.

a. Click the Start menu on the taskbar.

b. Scroll through the menu.

c. List the application programs that are accessible on this computer.

d. Close all open windows. 5. Shut down the computer.

a. Click the Start menu.

b. Click the Power button .

c. Click the Shut Down option, which closes all programs, shuts down Windows, and then turns off your computer. At work and in some laboratories, users do not turn off the computer. In that case, select the option for logoff. Activity (for a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet) 1. Start an app (this example is from iPad but it should work similarly for others).

a. Log in using face recognition or the pin number set up to access the device. Swipe to find the app on the screen (many mobile devices have multiple app screens).

b. Tap the app icon on the screen—in this case, the settings app.

c. Look at the various settings you can alter so the device functions as you prefer.

d. To return to the main screen, while leaving the app running in the background, depending on your model, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, press the Home button or pinch four or five fingers together on the screen. 2. View open and recently used apps.

a. Open the settings app and the camera app.

b. Double-click the Home button. You now see your most recently used apps in the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen.

c. To close an app, hold and tap the app in the multitasking bar. They will now jiggle and a minus sign will appear on the top left of apps that are open. Tap the X. Tap the minus sign and the app will close. Be careful with those that have an X on the top left. Selecting that will delete the app. 3. Use your favorite search site and find the online manual for your mobile device. Download it to your device and search for one new function to learn about operating your device. Share that information with your classmates as directed by your professor.
