As a result of a U.S. Supreme Court decision in the early 1960s, improperly or illegally obtained evidence cannot be used to convict an accused in the court system. This is referred to as the “exclusionary rule,” as the evidence is excluded from consideration by the court. The rule was put into place to stop police from using the wrong tactics to obtain incriminating evidence. Other developed countries handle such actions by their police force in a different manner.
