A British Workplace Behavior Survey used a sample of 4,000 employees from four large organizations, and discovered three broad categories of ill-treatment at work.

These included violence and injury (5 percent reported this), unreasonable treatment (50 percent reported this), and incivility and disrespect (40 percent reported this). The survey found that employers, managers, or supervisors were the main perpetrators (40 percent); clients or customers and the general public accounted for another 27 percent, and co-workers 22 percent. The targets of such behavior were younger workers, certain ethnic minorities, and women.
