Behavioral approaches to leadership

Neither the trait nor the behavioral approaches offered completely satisfactory explanations of leadership in organizations, causing researchers to develop contingency theories of leadership. Such theories viewed successful leadership as dependent upon the leader’s situation. The two contingency theories described in this section strongly differ. The first contingency theory views the leader as unable to change behavior readily; the second theory sees the leader as able to choose from a repertoire of behaviors. Each theory offers different ways of thinking about how a leader fits the requirements of a situation.
