Question:

Two blocks, of masses \(m_{1}\) and \(m_{2}\), are placed on a horizontal surface and attached to opposite ends of a spring as in Figure P15.48. The blocks are then pushed toward each other to compress the spring. When the blocks are released,

\((a)\) describe the motion of the center of mass of the system and

\((b)\) derive an expression for the angular frequency \(\omega\) of the motion.

(c) What is \(\omega\) in the limit \(m_{2} \gg m_{1}\) ?

(d) What is \(\omega\) when \(m_{1}=m_{2}\) ? Ignore friction and the mass of the spring.
