Race and ethnicity. Annually, the U.S. Census Bureau provides estimates of a variety of demographic characteristics of the U.S. population. In terms of categorizing people by race, the bureau divides the population into those of “Hispanic” origin and those not.Within these two origin categories, a person can be associated with one of several races. For 2007, the bureau gives the following probability estimates:
