Question:
Authentic leaders empower others in their organization by aligning them around a common purpose and set of values, and encouraging them to step up to lead. Authentic leaders can thus create high-performance organizations because all members are encouraged and inspired to reach their full potential.
Being an authentic leader requires you to have the hard conversations that give others the knowledge, courage, and confidence to step up and lead. Empowered leaders will continue to step up because they have the confidence that they will be supported, even if things do not work out well. As an empowering leader, you must help others recognize their unique gifts while also creating an environment that reward those gifts in action. No pressure! When you give other leaders the respect and responsibility to lead, and create a climate of trust, they will be accountable for results and willing to align their actions around a shared sense of purpose.
Answer and discuss the following question:
1. Recall a situation in which you faced a conflict between empowering other people and reaching your own performance goals.
• How did you resolve the conflict? Did you give preference to reaching your goals or to your relationships?
• Would you act differently in the future when facing a conflict between relationships and performance?
