Starbucks CEO, Howard Shultz, did a fantastic job at asserting leadership throughout the interview. He connected with what was meaningful to others by successfully addressing a major problem affecting almost every community in America, jobs and infrastructure. In addressing these topics he aligned his company’s visions with that of the people by offering a community development program which is funded by profits from local stores. He used symbolic language and positive communication by refusing to degrade or speak ill of our countries leadership and by reinforcing the need for business owners to step up to the challenge and work to make social change instead of relying on Washington to do so. He maintained a positive message and was obviously speaking from the heart throughout the interview using examples from personal experience to relate to a shared vision of prosperity for all. Mr. Shultz was effective in delivering a message that truly should inspire other business owners to follow his lead. He challenged the status quo by offering a program which does not pay for itself and will cost the company money. Although it may effectively help in marketing and push more business through local Starbucks locations I got the genuine feeling that was not the intent of his message and that was important to his exemplifying a shared vision.
