Chairman, and CEO, of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, exhibits impeccable leadership in inspiring a shared vision In his 2011 interview with MSNBC, Mr. Schultz states that "profitability as a sole objective, is a pretty shallow goal, and in fact, it is good business to balance profitability with a social conscience". Leaders envision future possibilities, but cannot act alone in achieving a goal. It takes a team of people; working together to make a movement that will benefit everyone as a whole. Leaders share their visions and "have a sense of what is uniquely possible if everyone works together for a common purpose" Kouzes and Posner (2012). In the interview, he states that "we cannot sit and wait for Washington"; therefore, making a stand and partnering up with The Abyssinian Development Corporation and the LA Urban League and sharing $100,000 per year, from the profit of each store to these two businesses. By doing so, Mr. Schultz is thinking of the future as a greater good and sharing his vision by "promoting growth with a new initiative" (Brzezinski, Geist & Scarborough 2011).
In the interview, Mr. Schultz expresses his emotions, by demonstrating a way for businesses and business leaders to take a stand, despite the lack of action from Washington, in creating jobs and employing Americans. He states that “Washington is only interested about their own employment every 2-6 years.." (Brzezinski, Geist & Scarborough 2011). He speaks from the heart when he says that "he begged Washington to put their foot in the shoe of Americans..." (Brzezinski, Geist & Scarborough 2011); in order to understand that someone needs to make an urgent change Mr. Schultz is showing other businesses that it takes a dream turned into a vision, that can be shared with others, to make a change in the world.
