Question:
Read the following discussion and give response. In your responses, consider the following: What are the similarities and differences between your response and your peers' responses? Explain these similarities and differences and evaluate the reasons for them. Now that you have read various points of view, have any of your opinions changed?
Does the process of forming one society work in practice? Explain. I would have to say no, but before I offer my reason for this position that I am presenting here, allow me to first disclose that I am an African American male who was born in the 1960’s in Mississippi, where I currently reside. With that said, there has been a concerted effort in this state to ensure that the African American race of people are yet thought of as second class citizens. This is evident in the decision by the governor of the state to declare the entire month of April Confederate Celebration month. The issue of the state flat been had not been determined as of yet but then you have this governor taking it into his own hands to make a statement to the world that the state of Mississippi has no problem in letting others on the outside know how they feel about the race relations in this state and nation, from a historical point of view, past and present may I add. This supports the statement in Olson and Olson when they stated that the African Americans, Asians, Mexican, and Native American communities were sealed off from the larger society. This is yet the case today, even though there have been some laws to regulate this action by the larger society of whites in this country; it yet finds a way to continue to exist. The authors added, “Filipino and Mexican Americans still lived in extreme poverty as migrant workers and factory laborers and continued to face racial hostility. And African Americans, now split into a rural base in the South and an urban one in the North, remained structurally and culturally separate from the larger society. These 20 million people were nowhere near being absorbed into America’s legendary melting pot”.
