Question:
Respond to the following statements
1. One of my family’s favorite restaurants to eat is La Caretta, a small Mexican restaurant. There are two locations close to us, and at least a couple more that I know of in the state. I think the company could benefit by simply transforming the process they use for ringing up customer orders.
When ordering food, the wait staff uses and old-fashioned restaurant order form. That paper is then given to the cooks and then returned to the customer to take to the cashier to ring up the order. There is never an amount written beside of the orders. At the location we visit most, the girl who rings up the order often must look in the menu for pricing.
The company could transform this business process by investing in a system like larger restaurants where the wait staff could input orders into a system for the kitchen staff as well as for the cashiers. Transforming this process could also benefit the customers so they knew what they were paying prior to going to check out. Management of the restaurant could benefit because it could help track what food has been sold and what they need to place orders for. It could even help them to have a better understanding of what items might not sell enough to have on the menu.
Because this is not a large company, they would probably benefit more from insourcing software because it would be less expensive.
2. The company that I currently work for, Nippon Express, uses an inefficient manual business process for bank reconciliation. Currently, we receive the documents from the bank every month in paper form, which we use to reconcile against our records printed from our system. The two paper reports are manually reconciled by looking up items and matching them up between what is printed from our in-house software and what is received from the bank.
Recently, I have been working with the bank to find a way for them to transmit the information directly to our server so that the manual process can be automated. We are currently using an outdated system (A/S 400), which is hardly used in these modern times. However, the benefit for us is that we have in-house staff that is able to re-develop the software when we ask them to. At this time I don't believe that we will need any outside help other than the bank to get this processed how I want it. The only reason why this wasn't done previously was because no one thought about bringing it up and finding a better solution to our current outdated process.
