Unsecured public WiFi networks are mostly less secure than a private networks (which are also insecure sometimes). For example, if we are in a coffee shop and there is a public WiFi network available, we are tempted to use it. Something that we don't know when we see a free public network, is that cyber-criminals continuously setup a WiFi network that looks authentic but is not, being a false front to capture data that passes through their hands. We are always willing to connect when we see "legit" network names, and the best way to protect us from these middle attackers, is by using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) when we use them, and then access our work or college systems or files, so we can ensure the session (when accessing sensitive information) will keep private and secure, even when using a public network with an attacker in the middle.
