Enhancing 105mm LG1 MK III Gun Operators Know-How Through Autonomous Maintenance Approaches
2. Abstract:
The First Royal Artillery Regiment Para at Terendak Army Camp acquired a new and sophisticated weapon system in 2020 namely 105mm LG1 MK III, exclusive to the Elite Brigade, particularly the 10th Parachute Brigade. The main role of Royal Artillery Regiment is to provide direct and indirect artillery fire support in the fields of operations. This acquisition not only strengthens national defence but also signifies a strategic move towards acquiring additional weapon sets in the future. Consequently, ensuring optimal efficiency of both the artillery systems and their operators becomes paramount. Within this context, this paper delves into the implementation of autonomous maintenance approaches to enhance the proficiency of weapon operators in Malaysia. Situated within the strategic frameworks of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK 12), Sustainable Development Goal 17(SDG 17), and Malaysia's Key Economic Growth Activity (KEGA), this initiative aims to fortify national security while catalysing socioeconomic development and global sustainability. By aligning defence modernization efforts with broader national development priorities, Malaysia endeavours to leverage autonomous maintenance practices to bolster defence capabilities, spur economic growth, and foster international collaboration. The primary objective is to investigate and employ the most effective autonomous maintenance practices to address abnormalities in weapons garage. A fuguai analysis has been conducted to identify abnormalities in the weapons garage, with any detected fuguai marked with F-Tag for attention and further action. The implementation of One Point Lessons (OPL) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) has been initiated to rectify these abnormalities and enhance the overall functionality of the weapon. This study focuses exclusively on the implementation of autonomous maintenance practices within the weapons garage. Common fuguai, predominantly in the physical category, are identified, with tailored OPL and SOP developed to guide artillery operators in addressing them. Certain fuguai necessitating expert technician intervention are flagged for specialized attention such as red F-tag. The standardization of OPL and SOP is deemed essential, serving as the primary guide for artillery users engaging in autonomous maintenance activities. The adoption of fundamental autonomous maintenance procedures is pivotal in upholding the efficiency of the artillery systems. Ultimately, this project aims to instil a culture of autonomous maintenance among artillery operators, fostering enhanced operational readiness within the regiment.

3. Introduction:
For over six decades, the First Royal Artillery Regiment Para has been a cornerstone of Malaysia's defense infrastructure, evolving steadily to meet contemporary challenges. Amidst this evolution, the regiment has encountered the imperative to adapt, particularly in terms of asset transformation, ensuring its continued relevance and effectiveness.
In the realm of artillery, a myriad of weapon types with diverse functions are employed to fulfill operational objectives. Among these, the latest additionthe 105mm LG1 MK IIIstands out as one of the most versatile and widely utilized weapons in modern warfare. Its adaptability and popularity underscore its significance in contemporary military operations, facilitating the machining and shaping of various materials crucial for defense purposes.
Despite its prominence, the longevity of such weaponry hinges on meticulous maintenance and upkeep. Neglecting this aspect can precipitate severe consequences, including machine breakdowns and compromised operational efficiency. Indeed, poor maintenance not only jeopardizes safety but also engenders quality issues and financial losses, emphasizing the critical role of maintenance in sustaining operational readiness.
To address these challenges, the concept of autonomous maintenance emerges as a transformative approach. By empowering machine users to perform routine maintenance tasks, autonomous maintenance aims to uphold equipment in optimal operational condition, mitigating the risk of production halts due to equipment failures. This proactive strategy not only enhances overall machine efficiency but also cultivates a culture of maintenance awareness among operators.
As Malaysia embarks on this journey of innovation and modernization, the implementation of autonomous maintenance assumes paramount importance. By embracing this approach, the First Royal Artillery Regiment Para endeavors to ensure zero breakdowns, zero accidents, and zero defects, thereby fortifying its operational capabilities and bolstering national security.
