When fined tubes see below are used for a shellandtube condenser, they are installed in a tube bundle surrounded by shellside saturated vapor. The saturated vapor condenses on the outside of the finned tube, while cold liquid flows inside the tube. It often happens that the condensed liquid film on the outside of the tube is retained between the fins on the lower half of tubes, as shown in figure below. Do you think retained condensate will affect the thermal heat transfer performance of the finned tubes, and if so how? Please explain the cause of liquid retention between fins.
