Dell is creating a new class scheduling system. The goal is to use the new system for the upcoming Spring/Summer semester, which means that it must be fully tested and implemented by the end of February, next year. (in 26 weeks). On June 1 this year, YOU are appointed the project manager for this critical software. Starting September 1 this year, you will have four people working for you, a User Interface designer (Amy), a Business Systems Analyst (Ryder), and two developers, Dola and Samir. Your team will be working closely with staff in the Infrastructure Support team. You have all the necessary hardware already and supporting software (e.g., database) so there are no fixed costs.
Amy earns $50/hour. Ryder earns $65/hour. Dola, the most senior developer Dell has, earns $90/hour, while Samir who is a new hire, earns $40/hour. Your salary is part of your superiors budget, and so does not factor into the budget for this project. During the months of September to December, Amy works 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. However, during January and February, she works 10 hours per day, Monday to Thursday. Since she has young children, she does not like to work overtime. Ryder works 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. In addition to her role as senior developer, Dola also teaches Java at Dell , so she is only available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8 hours per day for this development role. Samir, while young and somewhat inexperienced, shows great potential as a developer. Samir will spend 40 hours per week on this project. Testing will be done by Ryder and Samir. They estimate it will take 20% of their total time available to do the testing related tasks.
Your main stakeholder (project sponsor) is the CEO of the company, Arquette, who has been spearheading this project so far. As the new Dean, one of the main complaints he heard upon his arrival was the complexity of the scheduling system. He made improving this important system one of his key deliverables for this fiscal year, and he will be watching carefully to ensure that his first challenge is successful. He will want monthly status meetings with the team, as well as weekly status update reports from you.
Arquette convened a panel of users to discuss their complaints with the current system, and to voice their preferences for the new system. This panel met in March of this year. As the business Systems Analyst, Ryder was asked to attend this meeting. Out of this meeting, Ryder was able to understand the important requirements for the new system, but he will need further meetings (during Planning) to get all the requirements clarified.
