4.7 Bowditch Adjustment
The figure \( A B C D E \) and \(\Lambda^{\prime}\) plotted truly represent the actual figure on the ground because the ploted figure give two positions of \( A \), perhaps only one exist on ground. This displacement of \( A \) is due to the build-up error in surveying and plotting around the traverse. The total error in the figure indicated by line \(\mathrm{AA}^{\prime}\). The total error of the line \(\mathrm{AA}^{\prime}\) may be distributed over the figure in the following way.

2. Set off the horizontal line \( A A^{\prime}\) proportional to the total length of the traverse. Scale off the lengths of the traverse legs along it.
3. Erect perpendiculars at each point along the line. Pick-off the length of the closing error on the plot and mark it on the perpendicular erected at \( A^{1}\). Join small a and big A.
4. The intersection of a and A with the perpendiculars indicate the extent aA of the adjustment needed for each station.
5. Draw lines parallel to the direction of the closing error through points plotted.
6. The amount of error, given at \( E \) being \( e E \) is picked off the diagram and transferred to the line draw through \( E \) on the plot parallel to closing error.
7. The errors at each station are transferred to the point in the same way.
8. Join the positions of the adjusted points given the figure AbcdeA which now forms the adjusted graphical traverse.
