4.6 Final, Revised Exploratory Research Essay

The Exploratory Research Essay will be an essay that focuses on the following: What are the pros and cons of the topic of your choice?

Your essay must contain an introduction, at least 4 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You will devote half your essay to exploring the PRO side of the debate, and the other half exploring the CON side. Your essay should remain neutral, though you may discuss your own viewpoint in the final paragraph. Throughout your essay, you will use evidence from FOUR sources that you have chosen on this topic.

  • Required essay length: 4 - 6 FULL pages NOT including heading and works cited.
  • Your essay must have a thesis statement that focuses on the assigned essay topic, and allude to your intention to explore the topic and investigate both sides.
  • Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that connects to the thesis and the essay topic - this should be your words, not evidence. To keep it neutral, try using words like "Supporters say" "Opponents believe..." (There are many synonyms for these words, such asproponents, advocates - naysayers, critics.)
  • Each body paragraph must contain at least one-two uses of evidence (quotes/paraphrases from your sources). You must use ALL FOUR + of your sources in this paper.
  • A works cited at the end.
