7. Video Case Study: Training Through Simulation at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla

>> We have a new grad RN program that incorporates clinical skills, decision making, critical thinking, as well as simulation. >> And right now we're in the simulation lab. So in the simulation lab you've met Sam. Sam is our high fidelity simulator. With Sam you can do a lot of really neat things. You can see the monitor up there, which will actually show his heart rate. This is a real vasculature, and basically you're just going to start an IV on the simulator. We have a bunch of meds. And I want you to do everything in the simulation model that you would do on the normal floors. So right now you're kind of a new grad nurse. You're going to come down here not only a new nurse, but also as a more experienced nurse. And I also want you to bring me scenarios from your floor. >> Okay. >> As you progress as a nurse you're going to see things. And anything you see that might, you know, might spark interest in you, you might want to teach your employees this. >> Okay. >> And so I want you to bring me scenarios and we can kind of run all the employees, not only on your floor, but through those scenarios that you brought me. >> Okay. >> The Vol, [phonetic] which we monitor the heart rate with, actually corresponds with the Simans [phonetic] heart rate. So we want to actually shock them. So if you want to hook that in the lightning bolt cable. The shock light will come on. You want to make sure everybody's clear of the bed. >> I'm clear. You're clear. We're all clear. >> And shock. The patient [inaudible], and then we end the scenario.
