A. Before beginning this exercise, you should (a) review carefully, if you have not already done so, the different methods organizations use to conduct job analyses, and (b) review the Job Analysis Questionnaire (Exhibit 2.5). B. Students should be divided into pairs. Each person should then interview his or her partner with reference to a job about which the partner is very familiar. Use the Job Analysis Questionnaire for the interview. The questionnaire can be used to help determine the major responsibilities and tasks of the job and the required knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics needed to perform the job. C. After each student has interviewed his or her partner, write a job description covering your partners job. Remember to use action verbs when describing the employees tasks, duties, and responsibilities. It is also important that specific duties be grouped and arranged in descending order of importance. The completed job description should follow the format shown in Exhibit 2.6. The completed job description should be shown to the partner to determine whether additional information is required or whether changes should be made. Your instructor may require that you turn in a final copy of the completed job description for the next class. D. If time permits, the entire class should discuss the various uses of job descriptions and the effectiveness of the interview as a method of job analysis.
