During Labor Day Weekend of this year, Wildwood Beach held a boardwalk sale. On the boardwalk, there was a vendor selling beautiful hand-carved wooden baskets that could sit flat like a coaster but also pop up into a basket. He had various designs, but the one that most caught my eye was in the shape of a bumerfy. When he told me what the price was ( $300%, Ifelt my stomach tighten. I looked at my boytriend trying to flgure out how I was going to justily wanting this. We glanced at a few other designs and my boyfriend mentioned wanting to purchase one for his mother, a smaller design, for $65. The vendor, noticing that we kept going back to the butterfy shaped basket, began to negotiate a price. As 1 dscussed with him, I stated $365 would be too much for us to afford at the moment. While the baskets were beautiful and we loved the design, we were willing to look at other baskets in our price range. However, we kept going back to the butterfly basket. The vendor, again noticing that we kept looking at the basket, asked us what we would pay for both the butterfy basket and the basket my boyfriend wanted to purchase for his mother. Me additionally offered to engrave both baskets for us. While I did not plan to enter this impromptu negotiation, we settled on a price for $280. I was satisfied and quite grateful he came down on his price. I might have been able to probably ask for lower, but I also did not want to offend the vendor or his craft by lowballing. I would suy that we both used an integrative strategy. The vendor wanted to make a sale and we wanted to purchase at a more reasonable price. From the information I have gathered in the readings, this type of negotiation strategy created a win-win for both me and the vendor and added value to the relationship. Now, when someone complements me on the basket, I do not hesitate to tell them about the vendor who sold it to me or where they could purchase one for themselves.
This scenario is a pure distributive strategy.
(B) This scenario is a combination of distributive and integrative strategis.
