A loaded question is a form of complex questions that contain a controversial assumption. Such questions may be used as a rhetorical tool: the question attempts to limit direct replies to be those that are the questioner's agenda. Loaded questions contain "angel" or "devil" words. One example is do you think the power of big union bosses needs to be curbed? Another example would be do you think fat cat executives should be allowed to ship American jobs overseas? The questionnaire should equally accommodate respondents who naturally think in terms of "workers rights" versus "union bosses" or "free enterprise" versus "fat cat executives". Loaded questions should be avoided because they are written in a way that forces the respondent into an answer that doesn't accurately reflect his or her opinion or situation. Loaded questions are best avoided by pretesting your survey to make sure every respondent has a way to answer honestly. Once you realize that you are being asked a loaded question, there are several ways you can respond. You can reply in a way that rejects the presupposition. You can point out the fallacious reasoning. Lastly, you can ignore the question or refuse to answer it.
