About You
Consider how individuals affect team dynamics. People react in different ways and when working as part of a team, individuals can influence or be influenced by other team members. How do you react to change within a team? Describe your natural tendencies and reactions to change when you are on a team, or in a team you have been a part. It may be a work team, a committee, or an athletic team.
Personality type indicators, such as the MBTI or DISC help identify personality types and often help predict the tendencies of individuals. Share your MBTI and DISC types with the class. Are the expectations (as referenced in table 2.5 in your textbook) of your personality aligned with how you typically behave? If you do not know your MBTI and DISC types, take the free version of the tests listed in the website resources to identify them.
Personality types also influence people's function on a team. Review the Belbin team roles discussed in the text and this week's readings, and identify which role you play on a team, whether it's in the workplace, a committee, an athletic team, or some other group you are part of.
Part 2- Belbin Roles in Your Team
Create a table, listing the members of your current team at your workplace (not your group in this class) by their first name, and attempt to match each one to one or more of Belbins team roles. Are all roles represented? If so, is your team effective? If not, which of Lencionis five dysfunctions are manifested? Is this related to the absent Belbin role(s)? As a leader, what kinds of things might you do to help make the team stronger? (If you are not the team manager, imagine that you have just been promoted to take over.) If you aren't currently in the workforce, try to put this lens on your family members or group of friends to see if any of the roles are represented there.
