After reviewing Chapter 9 in the MacRae text, Week Sixs task is to write a persuasive message based on one of the scenarios in this prompt. Make sure that you hit all of the parts of the message and, most importantly, ensure that your message to the recipient is clear and received.

For this persuasive message, I would like for you to utilize a format other than the email. In other words, think about ways you can persuade your audience using words and design. The text is still extremely important and you will probably need 400+ words in this message; however, how you design the project will be just as important.

Some ideas from MacRae in Chapter 9

  • Ethos: the appeal to authority
  • Logos: the appeal to reason, including the use of facts
  • Pathos: the appeal to emotion
  • Persuasion is much more than just an appeal to reason. To truly persuade, you need to change the other persons emotions as well as his or her mind, and that is where pathos and ethos come in (MacRae, 2019, p. 179).
  • DO not use logical fallacies to persuade your audience. Remember, this must be an ethical persuasion.
  • AIDA: Attention, interest, desire, action

Choose one of the following scenarios and craft a persuasive message. Remember, be very specific in these messages adding any information and details you choose to make the appeal as persuasive as possible. Think back to everything you learned about writing persuasion and argument. You will utilize emotion, logic, credibility, and AIDA.

  1. At the end of every quarter, your company brings in a speaker to speak to the employees. This quarter has been extremely different as most of the employees have been working from home and the speech will need to be presented online. (Think Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.). Your job is to choose a person you wish to have speak with your company, what you would like the topic to be, why the company needs the speech and the speaker, and discuss any honorarium/benefit for the speaker.
  2. Every year your company raises funds (internal and external) for a local charity. Research and choose an actual charity your company is campaigning for. Create a persuasive message for an internal OR external audience. In other words, people who do not work for the company. Design the appeal so that your company can raise the most amount of money over the three-week campaign.
