Air is confined in a piston and cylinder assembly, is in thermal with its environment under ambient
Question:
Air is confined in a piston and cylinder assembly, is in thermal with its environment under ambient conditions. The piston exerts a pressure on the gas through the pressure of the ambient, and an additional 50 kg weight is exerting additional pressure through 100 cm2 area of the interface between the piston and the gas. Given this, determine the following
I. The weight is lifted all at once:
a. Determine the pressure and the temperature of the gas when mechanical equilibrium is reached, after removing the weight.
b. Determine the work you can obtain from this process, starting from lifting the weight, until the end of the point when thermal equilibrium is reached.
II. Repeat the analysis in (I) if you remove the weight in two equal installments.
III. Repeat the analysis in (I) if you remove the weight in four equal installments.
