An EHR is not a single system but one that connects with other systems to receive data and to supply information. Healthcare functions involve more than just data from theEHR, but from multiple applications and types of health information systems. This makes interoperability vital in the sharing of data between disparate systems. The computer systems need to be interoperable which means that they are able to "talk to each other" 

The HIM department can improve revenue cycle management and prepare to use business intelligence more effectively by understanding the interoperability for data sharing between facility systems. See Figures 11.2 and 11.4 in the Sayles and Gordon textbook, which show the relationship between health information systems and HIPAA transactions used in billing and reporting.
