Why are you in college?

Lets create a personal mission statement to help you clarify your reasons for enrolling in college. A good mission statement will be helpful when you need to introduce yourself and remind yourself of your focus and goals. Your personal mission statement is your calling and purpose.

Your mission statement should make a statement about:

• Who you want to be.
• What you want to accomplish.
• How you will do it.

Great mission statements are:

• One short sentence.
• Simple to say.
• Easy to remember.

Here are a few examples of good mission statements written by college students:

• My mission is to be an elementary education teacher, uncovering potential in children with kindness and fun.
• My mission is to be a manager of my own business, fostering cooperation in my employees with focus and dedication.
• My mission is to be a nurse, respecting and promoting life with respect for all.

Use these four steps to help yourself write a good mission statement:

Step 1: Choose a word or phrase that describes what you want your career or profession to be.

Possible career or professions include but are not limited to:

Teacher, accountant, business manager, nurse, physical therapist, engineer, and so on.

Write your word or phrase that describes what you want to be.

Step 2: Choose what you want to accomplish in your career or profession.

Possible options for what you want to accomplish in your career or profession include but are not limited to:

Educating students, balancing accounts, running a business, healing the sick, helping others become strong, designing and building, etc.

Write what you want to accomplish in your career or profession.

Step 3: Choose how you will do it.

Possible options for how you will do your career or profession include but are not limited to:

With honesty, integrity, a high quality of life, cooperation, teamwork, knowledge, understanding, self-direction, independence, trust, belief in self and in others, respect, tranquility and stability, independence, justice, freedom, dignity, confidence, ethics, flair, fun, character, love, humane kindness, honor, equality, mercy, self-respect, faith, self-determination, or compassion, etc.

Write how you will do it.

Step 4: Now, put your personal mission statement together!
