Question:
As a marketing researcher for Samsung Electronics within the Information Technology and Communication space, you are quite aware of the demographics in South Africa. More so, with specific reference to the population growth and the relatively young population profile of South Africa with almost half (50%) of the South African population being between the ages of 30-40 years of age. Samsung has just launched its Galaxy Z Fold4 at a purchase price of R36,000 and given its price, it does seem to be aimed at the higher end of the South African cell phone market. Given South Africa’s high unemployment rate, particularly amongst the youth, Samsung wants to investigate a more affordable Galaxy Z Fold4 and whether particularly, unemployed youth males or females will opt for this more affordable Galaxy Z Fold4. Another consideration for Samsung is that a recent statistic revealed that in 2020 the male-to-female ratio was 5:10.
Required:
1.1 Suggest at least one (1) independent variable and one (1) dependent variable for this research project. In your answer, motivate why a variable will be considered independent or dependent.
1.2 Based on the scenario above, as a researcher, you have decided to use the Chi-square statistic to test for the dependence of the uptake of a more affordable Galaxy Z Fold4 by the unemployed youth (male or female).
1.3 Discuss some of the assumptions and requirements underlying the use of the Chi-square statistical test in this fictitious scenario. In your answer, use the fictional scenario as an example to illustrate how the Chi-square test can be used.
