Assessment 2: CASE STUDY- 'YOUR ' This assessment has TWO parts. I YOUR TASK: Read the scenario below and complete the tasks that follow Case Study- YOUR SALADS (Y5) Imagine that you work as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) at 'Your Salads' (Y5). 'Your Salads' (Y5) is a fast-growing creator and producer of fresh, healthy salads. It supplies fresh, nutritious salads to individual homes and offices all across Brisbane city. The owner ofthe company, Mark Morgan started the business from home 4 years ago. He started selling the salads from his home kitchen to his local neighbors and businesses. His salads became very popular within a year. He set up a proprietary limited company three years ago. The business grew rapidly and now operates from a large warehouse in an outer suburb in Brisbane. The company employs 70+ staff and caters to customers all over Brisbane. It plans to expand to the fringe cities, including Ipswich, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast within the next 12 months. In order to expand its operations, the company needs to borrow additional funds from the bank. The warehouse is located in a small shopping complex that also houses other businesses including a charitable organisation that helps migrant workers to find employment, a printing company, a small cafe, an art gallery to name a few. Just across the shopping complex is a local primary school and childcare centre. Just around the shopping complex are a large number of residential homes. The suburb's demographic profile is given below: The lifestyle of a suburb is often influenced by who lives there. Top 3 Details 45.9% Independent Youth 11.9% Older Couples & Families 8.9% Older Independence 8.8% Maturing & Established Independence 7.7% Elderly Singles 5.2% Established Couples & Families 4.9% Elderly Couples 3.9% Maturing Couples & Families 2.1% Young Families 0.7% Elderly Families The community is very multicultural and diverse. While the financial performance of Your Salads has been outstanding over the last four years, it has recently encountered a lot of criticism in the local press and social media. The following is a summary of the criticism that YS has faced from the local community: 1. Food wastage: A number of local residents have expressed concern about the amount of fresh food that is wasted by YS. The large commercial bins outside the shopping complex are filled daily with all the unsold salads and unused fresh foods. The bins spill over into the shared car park areas creating a health and safety hazard for other people. Additionally, the garbage is collected weekly, so all the weekly waste results in significant bad odour in the area around YS. 2. Noise and traffic: The food production at YS happens inside their building, however, due to the nature of the business, there is constant traffic movement in and around the shopping complex. A large number of small delivery trucks and other delivery vehicles are constantly loading and unloading boxes in the common car park, often creating a traffic hazard. This particularly causes a traffic jam during school drop-off and pick-up hours. The neighbours have contacted YS, but the management has not taken any action yet. The local residents are planning to lodge a complaint with the city council. 3. Paper and plastic consumption: Even though YS is a food outlet, it seems to use significant amount of paper and plastic in its production chain. An insider leaked information to the local newspaper about how the company does not recycle its recyclable waste and how a significant amount of paper used in the office and in packaging is just thrown out with the general waste. They alsorevealed that the company continues to use significant amount of plastic boxes, plastic bottles and non-reusable bags for various aspects of food storage and production. 4. Lack of engagement with local community: YS has never supported any community event, local school events or other philanthropic work initiated by other community members. This has been the experience of volunteer groups, local church groups and the school community. 5. Employment practices: The company employs over 70 staff. The demographic ofthe staff are as follows: a. 77 people were employed by Y5 at the end of the last financial year b. 98% of Y5 staff were White (out of staff whose ethnicity was known), and 2% were from all other ethnic groups combined 88% of Y5 staff were Males d. YS had no staff over the age of 54. 65% staff were under 15 (a strategy used to reduce labour costs) e. All senior positions at YS were held by males f. 75% ofthe workforce was hired on a casual basis to cut operational costs. 0 Mark Morgan, the owner ofthe company is very concerned about the growing negative feedback from the community.
