Using the online materials, you will read, research and reflect upon 3 incidents of discrimination in Canadian history. Instructions: In recent history Canada has established a reputation for welcoming immigrants and refugees. After World War II ended in 1945, hundreds of thousands of Europeans who had suffered from the war came to Canada. Canada welcomed 40,000 Hungarian refugees when the Communists marched into Hungary in 1956. 60,000 Vietnamese ("boat people") fled to Canada in 1979, including a large group to Ottawa (Project 4000). Thousands of Indians who were living and working in Uganda came to Canada in the 1980s when the dictator Idi Amin kicked them out. The first Muslim Senator in Canada's Parliament was one of that group. We have applied humanitarian grounds along with the United Nations definition of refugees as a basis for accepting refugees from Chile, Bosnia, Kosovo and many other countries. Canada was also the first country in the world to expand the definition of refugees to include those facing "gender persecution". In 1986, Canada received the Nansen Refugee Award from the United Nations for its international humanitarian efforts. Not everyone agrees with the policy of being so welcoming; in fact, it is very much in the news these days. Discrimination and racism in Canada today are generally regarded as offensive and unacceptable. That has not always been the case. In assignment will be asked to look at some historical cases in Canada where discrimination and racism played a role. Choose any three of the following: 1.
