Assignment 1:
Reinforced concrete beams - Flexure
For the beam whose cross section is shown in the figure the following data is given:
Continuous beam with 4 equal spans with length 1=8.0m; distance from adjacent beams
4.5 m (on either side)
Beam loads (distributed): g=35kNm,q=9kNm
Cross section dimensions: h=650mm,bw=300mm,hf=130mm
Cover to reinforcement c=30mm(assume 10 mm ties and 20 mm longitudinal bars to
estimate d; you may select smaller bars later on)
Materials: C25/30 concrete and B500 steel (consider cc=1.0, as per Eurocode 2)
Calculate the required longitudinal reinforcement at the spans and the supports of the beam.
Select appropriate longitudinal bars in each case and provide a sketch of the arrangement of the
reinforcement that you designed.
Notes:
In designing the reinforcement, note the symmetry of the beam.
Use the provided tables for the design of R/C sections with rectangular compression zone
For the T-beam section use also the provided tables for T-beams and compare with above
