Because it is funded by grants and other temporary funding mechanisms, there is only one full-time employee and a set of students and other unpaid workers who volunteer their time. Clients are eager to receive assistance in challenging circumstances and often express this frustration directly to the volunteers. Extensive paperwork is often the rule as funding organizations and internal office communication processes require documentation of client contacts and case status. Like many other social service environments, it is stressful and often thankless work and turnover can be quite high. Such an environment often requires that social support networks develop among organizational members so that they can support one another through challenging circumstances to avoid burnout and poor performance. Julie, the manager of the center, holds a staff meeting to address some of the most common problems in the office. It appears that there are inconsistencies in the office process, which seems to confuse many of the staff members and contribute to a feeling of chaos in an already stressful environment. Moreover, Julie can at times have a dogmatic style that pushes information instead of involving staff members in learning how to find the answers or solve problems on their own.
