A labor dispute arose between auto companies in the United States and their employees. The

employee's union gave notice of a nationwide strike. Fearful that such a work stoppage would

jeopardize the United States national defense, the President issued an order directing the

Secretary of Commerce to take possession of the nation's automobile manufacturing and

assembly plants. After obeying the orders under protest, the auto companies brought suit in

District Court.

Do you think the President has the authority to order the seizure of the auto manufacturing

and assembly plants? Why or why not? Are there provisions either in the Constitution or in
