Amazon strives to have an employee workforce that emphasizes growth and development. In order to do this, Amazon has created a Learning & Development team that specifically focuses on improving their employees' experiences within the company and ensuring that there are programs in place to prepare them for their job. In addition, Amazon also works with the company UpSkill America which studies how to effectively educate employees and career development. In their new Upskilling 2025 program, Amazon announced that they plan to retrain 100,000 employees to help them adapt to a workplace that is becoming increasingly disrupted by automation and new technologies (Petro, Greg). The following roles are on their Learning & Development training team:
Learning Manager: At operation sites, Learning managers oversee Trainers and Learning Specialists, as well as have their own training program. By forming partnerships with other learning teams, they exchange the best practices so that they can coach members on how to manage their employees.
Trainer: In Amazon Fulfillment Centers, trainers must plan and carry out training for all of the different processes. They work with Operations to identify training gaps as they concentrate on enhancing the efficacy and implementation of learning programs.
Learning Specialist: They are responsible for developing and auditing training plans, recruitment and training of instructors, and supporting them through their process. They also use the information that they learn through working with team members and other stakeholders, to pinpoint areas that need improvement.
Learning Business Partner: They focus on creating and evaluating the different training programs that are created and work closing with the senior team and Amazons centra leadership functions. Building, identifying, and aligning individual leadership development plans, they produce a library of learning materials in accordance with organizational requirements.
Regional Learning Manager: They are the ones who develop and create teams of Learning Managers that support a specific region. They make sure that uniform onboarding and training procedures are applied throughout the whole network of Fulfillment Centers. Additionally, they collaborate with experts in other areas to find, test, and execute practices for emerging digital learning solutions.
Taking a look at Amazons biggest competitors, Walmart and Target have their own way of ensuring that their employees are focusing on their company culture and doing their best at the job. In 2016, Walmart created what is known as The Walmart Academy which is committed to developing training programs for their associates and helping them advance further in the company. The academy is a dedicated location, in or near a Walmart Supercenter, where our front-line hourly supervisors, department managers, and assistant managers receive two to six weeks of training (Walmart link). The program has been running for a very long time now and it is reported that customers are seeing the benefit of it and its helping to transform the Walmart experience. In addition, Walmart just expanded their in-person and online employee training program to reach globally. The program is called One Global Walmart Academy and their main goal is to help their employees around the globe to expand their career. This program will bring together all of the companys training and development programs, including the recently announced College2Career pilot which is putting graduates on a career path to be a store manager within 2 years. Target takes a different approach when it comes to training their employees to work in their many stores across the country. The layout of Target is very similar in all their locations and for the most part, consists of; grocery section, kids clothing, adult clothing, home decor, electronics, beauty products, and so much more. Due to the fact that Target has so many different types of products that they are selling in the store, they prepare their employees by having them train in many of the different sections so they have a rounded knowledge on them all. Especially during the holiday season when they begin to get more customers, their employees need to be able to move to different areas that need the most help and accurately assist customers. There isnt much information out there on if Target has a specific and lengthy training program for their new employees other than the fact that each employee receives basic training.
Comparing all three of those companies' learning and development programs, research shows that Amazon and Walmarts training is the most extensive. As discussed briefly above, Amazon is investing more than $700 million over the next 6 years to provide upskilling for 100,000 U.S. employees- roughly one-third of its U.S. workforce (Grensing-Pophal). Amazon is working towards improving access to training for all of their employees. They want to provide them with skills that vary from technical to non-technical roles in the companys corporate office, retail stores, fulfillment centers, and transportation network. This program is going to increase employee retention across the organization and attract new people to want to join the company. Amazon also made the right call training staff that have already worked in the company because they already have an idea on how the organization works and can build on their prior knowledge.
