Crimes are divided into two classes based upon the amount of possible jail time associated with the crimes committed (felonies and misdemeanors). Crimes are also classified by the nature of the person who has committed the crime. Over the last decade we have seen a growth in white collar or executive level crimes. From Enron to Tyco to AIG to Madoff, it seems that white collar crimes have gotten larger and more significant. What do you think about white collar crimes - are they out of control or just something that we must live with in a property-based legal system? What about the penalties for committing these crimes? Are they strong enough to deter these crimes if we wanted to significantly reduce white collar crimes?
