CSU ENG Spring
Dr Yvonne Bruce
Paper : What Do You Say
Assignment purpose and description
Now that youve practiced some of the most important aspects of understanding and summarizing someone elses contribution to a conversation, its time to respond.
Good response is just as difficult as good summary, because as Gerald Graff explains, when you respond, you must still stick to the points the other author brings up: you must face both outward toward the author being summarized and inward toward yourself In other words, you must acknowledge and honor the confines of the conversation the other writer has established at the same time you move the conversation in the direction you want to go
It's not easy!
Think before you speak. Read before you think.

Assignment instructions HISTORY OF BAGELS IN US
You may respond to the source you used for your summary, OR you may respond to another substantial, lengthy, nonscholarly if possible source using a Michael Schwartz library database.
This paper, unlike your summary paper, should have a thesis that reflects YOUR response, though you must consider the source in your thesis. As Graff puts ityou should keep in mind what they say as you move through the rest of your text. After summarizing the ideas you are responding to its very important to continue to keep those ideas in view throughout your paper. In other words, even when presenting your own claims, you should keep returning to the motivating they say NEW YORK BAGELS ARE THE BESTAL
What you should NOT do is think of this assignment as a summary with a separate response that does not consider the content of the source; instead, think of what they say and what you say as a unit.

Draft pp or Outline
The draft and outline will be graded using the check system described in the syllabus.
If you choose to complete an outline instead of a draft, the outline should include a full thesis statement and at least three body points expressed as complete sentences. In addition, each body point should include a supporting point, also expressed as a complete sentence.
Revision pp
You will revise your draft to refine its content, rhetoric, and formattingcomposition You will also attempt to incorporate any additional techniques or other course material that we have discussed since the draft version was due. See the syllabus for additional information.
The revision should be MLA formatted and must include an MLA citation of your library source. The citation must include the name of the specific database you used to obtain your source.
Evaluation
I will grade the draft or outline using a check system: it will earn a check plus, a check, a check minus, or no check. These marks will be awarded according to how well your paper responds to the description, meets the expectations outlined here, and reflects conscientious composition. I will not record the grade until you revise the paper, at which time I will convert it into a number score worth up to points. What this means, in other words, is that the draft will piggyback on the revision. Thus, if you score very well on the draft, youll know youre on the right track for the revision; if you dont score so well, youll have the opportunity to improve your grade by revising well and conscientiously. The final score will reflect this effort to revise.
