Design a single stage spur gearbox for which output speed should be in between 218 and 222 rpm. A four-cylinder engine provides input power of 20 kW and runs at 2200 rpm. Design has to be compact. Use 1020 steel (S,-400 MPa, S.-500 Mpa) for gears, shafts, and keys. Use design factor 1 for all calculations. MAJOR TASKS EXPECTED FROM YOU AS A DESIGNER: Gears 1. Select the type of gear set. Calculate the number of teeth of both gears. 2. Determine the loads acting on the teeth of each gear, i.e. the transmitted load W₁. and the radial load W₁. Use = 20°. 3. Determine the face width and pitch diameter of pinion. Assume gear teeth are produced by hobbing. Shafts 4. Calculate the diameter of the shaft that holds pinion. Assume the distance between pinion and bearings is 25.4 mm and the shaft has uniform diameter throughout. 5. Determine the dimension of the key for the pinion. Bearings 6. Calculate the basic load rating (C) of all bearings. The life of the bearings should be at least 10 cycles for this gearbox.
