Develop a conceptual model in ERD Plus for a commercial Library using entity-relationship methodology.
The library offers a variety of products to its customers. These include books, journals, magazines,
multimedia content etc. The products can be loaned by the customers for a fee that is determined
by the duration of the loan. Penalty is levied if a loan is not returned by the designated date and
time. The database is required to keep track of all the transactions occurring in the library. Besides
providing details about the patrons and the holdings, the system should be able to able to point to the
specific location where each item is shelved. The system should be able to generate a list of customers
and material that are overdue. Use your common knowledge about libraries to develop this conceptual
model.
Clearly mark/label:
1. Entities
2. Attributes
3. Relationships
4. Primary Key Attributes
5. Participation and Cardinality constraints
Organize various objects in the diagram so that it is easy to read. Avoid unnecessary clutter and
crossings of relationship lines.
Make/Add comments and assumptions as necessary.
Create the model in ERD-Plus. When done, save the diagram as an image in PNG format. Please
remember that the assignment focuses correctly modeling the required system, that is choosing correct
elements and labelling them as well as including all business components of the intended database
system are equally significant.
Adjust the size of the image so that the diagram is readable. Make effective use of available space and
do not leave much empty space. You may have to move entities and relationship lines to optimize the
space and improve clarity.
The quality of the ER model will be assessed on following metrics:
1. Correctness of various elements of the model.
2. Establishing logical relationships.

3. Completeness of the model reflected by depiction of all relevant attributes and entities. A good
ERD requires a logical and complete conceptualization and correct representation of entities, attributes, relationship, cardinality constraints, and other important concepts. The model should
include all elements that are necessary but not include redundant entities, attributes, and relationships.
4. Complying with all instructions.
