Supply Chain Management and Child Labor/ Christian Worldview
Over the past few decades, ethics has gained momentum in businesses, especially in the supply chain management. Ethics in business is concerned with the rules of human behavior and considers whether it is right or wrong. It is divided into descriptive morality, applied ethics, and ethical theory. Ethics in the operations management is concerned with identifying ethical issues in the supply chain, how the department resolves the issues and whether they should be managed. Today many businesses are faced with the pressure of having to comply with ethical standards to ensure that they penetrate in the market without facing any problem. Corporate social responsibility is the main reason they are facing ethical challenges.
Ethical issues that should be observed by businesses and the general public differ from one society to another due to ethnic and religious differences. Mostly the basis of ethical reasoning is the religion since it presents a standard of morality. Christians derive the moral conduct from the Bible while other religions are guided by their religious books such as the Koran. Although the society is growing with the tradition of basing ethical standards with religions, philosophers argue that ethics can stand on its own without religion. According to philosophy, ethics is based on the analysis of what is right and wrong on reasoning and experience rather than incorporating religious teachings. This affirms that people with ethical values are not only in the religious sector but even those who does not belong to any religion. Ethics needs to be independent and determining whether something ethical does not require anyone's approval.
It requires moral reasoning. The ethical dilemma, in this case, is about child labor in the supply chain. Many companies are being criticized for employing children in their plants. An example is Apple Inc. which has been criticized for employing children in its supply chain. These criticisms give the companies negative publicity which forces them to perform an audit and enhance controls that are aimed at ensuring that child labor does not happen again in the organization (Moore & Watch, 2011). A child is found working in a company and is fired, it will have multiple effects not only to the child but also the society. In some societies, children are not forced to work, but it is because it is the only option that is available. Despite the legal policies that are in companies of regulating child labor, they always find child labor is bad, they do not support these kind of issues.
Child labor dangerous work that exceeds reasonable hours and interferes with a child's education. Child laborers are vulnerable to abuse, and their families are often trapped in a cycle of poverty. In extreme cases, children are forced to work under threat of violence or death.
TIPS FOR HELPING END CHILD LABOR
Educate yourself. Use resources such as those suggested here, and then share what you learn with friends, family, co-workers, and others, and work together to increase your voting power.
Contact retail stores, manufacturers, and importers. Kindly ask them questions about the origins of their products. Let them know you want to buy products that dont involve child labor, and give them suggestions for ethical products and services they can offer instead.
Buy fair trade and sweatshop-free products whenever possible. Buy used when you cant. Or borrow, share, trade, make it yourself, etc. Look for certified fair trade labels such as Fair Trade Certified, Fairtrade America, and the Goodweave label to ensure that youre supporting positive practices that dont involve child labor. Also be sure to use Food Empowerment Projects Chocolate List to ensure that the chocolate youre purchasing wasnt made using child labor.
Grow more of your own food. Buy from farmers markets (verify their labor practices first), Community Supported Agriculture, and U-Pick farms.
Share your time and money. Forgo that daily latte or expensive make-up or go out to eat a bit less, and funnel that money toward supporting reputable groups that are helping free children from exploitative labor and helping them get a good education. Volunteer your time when you can.
Contact local, regional, and national legislators. Ask them to pass laws that ensure no products in your city/state/country are made with child labor, and encourage them to adopt codes of conduct which include concern for humane, sustainable, just practices.
Contact businesses that do business in countries that have child labor. Encourage them to put pressure on government officials to take appropriate action and on businesses that use child labor to use sustainable, fair-trade practices.
Invest ethically. If youre a shareholder, use your voice to ensure that your companies support humane, sustainable, just practices that dont include child labor.
Contact government leaders.
