Do you agree with my classmate discussion question below.
Classmate 1 Question Two of the barriers to a goof police-community relationship would be political conditions and demographic conditions. Political conditions are important and all communities have a degree of liberalism or conservatism, degree of community homogeneity, political stability, and overall government effectiveness interact with and affect how well the police provide law enforcement services. Demographic conditions such as age, race, sex, and religious characteristics of a community influence law enforcement. Different population groups make various demands on the police, and the police must be organized to satisfy these differential requests and expectations. In order to avoid these barriers, I would learn about the community and the area I am serving. The theory of uncertainty and dependence is when problems organizations face when they lack information about the environment. Knowing the people and the community you serve can give police a better understanding of how to deal with the citizens if there were an emergency.
Classmate 2 Question Regarding good police-community relationships, there is barriers or threats that stand in the way for this to occur. For instance, there is rudeness that has taken place. Many citizens complain that interactions with some police officers end up being short, rude, or even disrespectful. Some officers seem to not enjoy their job or just may be having a bad day (Gaines, 2011). This is not really what a department would want to be representing because there will be less of an effort by the community to create a relationship if some officers are not cooperating. Which I feel like this can be a tricky subject; however, I think that maybe counseling or therapy for this officer, can help and figure out what they may be upset about and then we can figure out if that is something that is potentially in our control, as police administrator, to fix. Another problem that affects the relationship is the use of excessive force (Gaines, 2011). This has been a large problem in many police departments, especially with departments that involve many violent encounters with the community. Now it is hard for this to be solved due to the fact that the amount of trials will compile the court and maybe push back time for other cases or trials. This will result in less police on the street if all of these officers are being accused for excessive force. I think one way to potentially avoid this problem is yearly or even monthly training to ensure that every officer knows the correct amount of force to use in a situation. I also believe that it is important for officers to be able to document what they are doing and have the film be documented whether it is dash cams or body cams. However, sometimes it seems that when an officer wants a camera to not work, then that may happen. I think one other possibility that could work is informing the community better about the rules and regulations of what an officer, can do in different interactions, or how to react in different reactions. If they learn how to react in a more safe way, then there is more of a chance that the officer will be in better behavior as well causing fromore relationships and bonds to form.
