Unoccupied	Child is not engaged in play or does not seem to have clear goal in play. Child may make random movements of body, walk/crawl around, etc. They may also haphazardly touch or manipulate toys/materials around them (though, again, there is no clear goal as they do so).	This stage lays the foundation for later stages of play and development. Child begins to understand movements of body and hones motor skills. Child also gains some practice with self-control, learns about the world and how it works, and experiences moving/manipulating objects.
Solitary	Child engages in play without interacting with others They may play with toys near others but do not interact with them	Child gains independence, learns to entertain themselves, and develops confidence in their own ideas and action
Onlooker	Child observes other children playing but does not join in	Child gains perspective on how others interact and play, giving them more ideas for their own play They also gain familiarity with the rules and structure of play.
Parallel	Child begins to engage with other children but in an independent way They may play with the same toys at the same time, but not interact with each other	Child begins to form relationships with peers, gains practice with sharing and turn taking, and learns to be considerate of others
Associative	Child begins to interact with others They may play with one another, taking turns, suggesting ideas, and following each other's lead	Child develops communication and problem solving skills, as well as cooperation and collaboration skills They also gain more confidence in their own ideas and abilities.
Cooperative	Child engages in play with others in a more organized and structured way. They have an overall shared goal or objective, and they work together to complete it	Child practices problem solving and communication skills, as well as teamwork and collaboration They also gain a sense of accomplishment when they complete their task.

• For each content area, provide a detailed description and example of how play might help to further a child's learning in that area.
• Make sure to write about each content area separately.  For example, you should identify and explain how play would help a child develop language and literacy skills, better undertand mathematics, etc.
  • You might structure your narrative by writing one paragraph for each of the five content areas (language and literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, creative arts).

 

Remember, a good rule of thumb is a minimum of three (3) sentences per paragraph.
