structure steel.
Note that each question will have different value for the uniformly distributed load,
w.
A new bench, 2m in length, is proposed to be constructed with a leg length of 0.3m
and subjected to a vertical uniformly distributed load (UDL) of 0.4kNm acting on
the bench surface, and no horizonal forces. Instead of a round HSS for use as the
bench leg as used in Question 1(see Figure 1), a square HSS is proposed. The cross-
section dimensions for the square HSS are show in in Figure 4. Compressive strength
testing was completed on the square HSS with the results of the testing provided in
Figure 5. Assume the elastic modulus of steel is 200GPa.
When using Figure 5 to understand the force at yield, use a precision of 25kN to
interpolate the graph to determine the force to use in the calculation. For example,
if the interpolated force is 165kN, use a value of 175kN in your calculation (i.e.,
round up in this case). As for another example, if the interpolated force is 155kN,
use a value of 150kN in your calculation (i.e., round down in this case).
Determine the yield stress for the square HSS in MPa. Use 3 significant figures.
