Theory X

1. Assumes employees are naturally unmotivated and dislike working.

2. Encourages an authoritarian style of management.

3. Usually the minority.

4. In mass organizations, such as large scale production environment, theory X is unavoidable.

5. Employees interest in the job is restricted to just being paid.

Theory Y

1. A participative style of management that is decentralized.

2. Assumes employees are happy to work, self-motivated, etc.

3. More widely applicable.

4. Lower-level employees handle work autonomously.

5. Work can be natural if the conditions in the workplace are favorable.
