Case Study: You have been called in to help managers at a fast-growing medical engineering company who design and manufacture specialist medical analysis equipment. Your job is to help managers solve some problems that have arisen because of rapid growth. Customer demand has grown significantly in two years and boomed more recently. During this time more than 30 new research and development engineers have been hired and production line employee numbers have also risen substantially. The growth has been so swift that the company still operates informally, its organisational structure is loose and flexible, and employees are encouraged to find solutions to problems as they go along. Although this structure has worked well in the past, problems are arising. There have been increasing complaints from employees that good performance is not being recognised. Employees do not feel they are being treated fairly and that managers are listening to their ideas. A bad atmosphere is developing which is causing morale to decline resulting in several talented employees leaving the company. From an equipment production point of view, production of the companies designed analysis units is suffering and they are struggling to meet order deadlines. There has been investment in new production line machinery but the building in which the production line is housed is quite old and the environmental conditions are not good. While the investment in new production equipment has help to improve production slightly, problems with equipment misuse and breakdown are commonplace. Your job is to advise the company on how it could solve these problems. The company is particularly interested in how it can improve motivation and morale, prevent talented people from leaving, reduce production problems and improve production to meet its orders.
