For Week 1 Breakout we will be looking at the notion of "Equality" via the principle "Free people are not equal & equal people are not free." Using the principle "free people are not equal & equal people are not free" as a guide, analyze the notion of equality and how it translates to freedom, wealth and individual rights in a nation. You will want to make sure to read chapters 4 & 11 in our text prior to beginning. For the first week or two, I will be providing some prompts to help you get started. You do not have to answer every question, simply start analyzing the topic in a way that is of interest to you and begin sharing with the group. My hope is that the topic spurs some critical thinking on your part and you can use this time to ask questions, share concerns, help each other when clarity is needed, engage in healthy debate and learn how to evaluate policy issues critically. The following are prompts you can use as a jumping off point to get started: What measures can be put in place to promote "equality" in a way that encourages economic growth? Is there a correlation between "equality" and "prosperity?" What about a correlation between "equality" and economic freedom? From a public policy perspective, how should policy makers approach "equality" in a way that protects individual's rights. What happens when a nation dismantles institutions that provide equal protections for property rights, rule of law, and a legal system? How can it be that "equal people are not free?" What are examples of this principle? Your grade for each breakout is based on your level of effort and contribution to the discussion.
