CNR's Poor Environmental Track Record Canadian National Railway (CNR) has a long history of train spills, which have resulted in significant environmental damage. In 2005, CNR was charged by Alberta Environment with failing to take all reasonable measures to remedy and confine the spill from a train derailment into a northern Alberta lake. In the incident, 43 cars derailed next to Wabamun Lake, west of Edmonton, spilling almost 800 000 litres of heavy fuel and a potentially cancer-causing wood preservative. Alberta Environment spokeswoman Kim Hunt said the charges were laid by Alberta Justice after a review. It's the law in Alberta that the polluter pays, Hunt told the Canadian Press. After the spill, Alberta Environment issued an Environmental Protection Order to CNR. The company was ordered to clean up the spill, begin long-term environmental planning and monitoring of the area, and keep the public informed on its progress. Residents of Wabamun were told in June 2006 that they could use the lake again for swimming and boating, but not for washing dishes, cleaning vegetables, or bathing. CNR offered nearly $7.5 million on a sliding scale to the area's 1600 residents. The payments, which ranged from $1,500 to $27,000 for those closest to the spill, were in recognition of loss of property use as a result of the derailment. The Paul First Nation, whose reserve is on the western shore of the lake, also filed a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against CNR, Ottawa, and the province, alleging that the spill destroyed its traditional way of life. In September 2008, CNR reached a $10 million settlement with the band. Earlier in 2008, three charges were laid by Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada against CNR: one for allegedly depositing a substance harmful to migratory birds into a lake and the other two for alleged disruption of a fish habitat. CNR's poor environmental performance continues today. In early 2015, three train spills occurred in Northern Ontario within the span of one month. In one case, crude oil entered the Mattagami River System.
